Join us at the NPDES Permit Hearing for the Crown III Mine in Girard, December 14th, 2010
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public hearing on a draft NPDES Permit (water pollution permit) at the Girard City Hall on Tuesday December 14th at 6:00pm for Springfield Coal, LLC’s Crown III Mine.
This is an underground room and pillar mine that practices coal slurry and coal ash injection into the mine void. Coal ash is also mixed into the surface slurry cells, and CALM members have observed major dust control problems, with clouds of fine refuse and ash seen blowing across neighboring fields.
Multiple domestic wells are located in close proximity to the surface facility at Crown III.
